You are smart, Intelligent, Egg-Headed, and creative like me, but what if we both were mistaken?
Have you ever gone through a time when you think you are a polymath, or have you ever felt discouraged like you cannot achieve anything in your life? There is something called Dunning Effect, which explains why dumb people feel proud. As this effect goes, it’s my favorite. It explains in very detail why some people believe they are much more capable of doing things; in reality, this is not the case; in contrast, intelligent people undermine their real potential. More concisely, “some people are too stupid to realize how stupid they are.” Justin Kruger and David Dunning in 1999 performed some experiments and tested people whether people who lack skills for something are more likely to lack self-awareness of their ability; in their research paper, they write about Pittsburgh Bank Robber “MacArthur Wheeler” as an example; who was arrested in 1995 due to his mindlessness. He wore Juice on the face without covering himself with any cloth, directly entered in Bank, and danced in front of CCTV; thus, he protested “Officer How you recognized me” idiot thought he would be invisible by rubbing the face with Juice. Again Dunning tested other groups of people in laughing matter; they had to vote for the funniest joke; as expected, most people judged jokes by their ability, but When Dunner asked them to rate their own jokes, they rated above average, which was not. In other experiments, Dunning and Ehrlinger found women performed equivalently to menin science quizzes, women underestimated their abilities and performance because they believed men had much more reasoning ability skills than women; therefore, they were likely to choose another field instead of science.
Don’t be afraid to be wrong; just admit you don’t know all the answers its normal instead of pretending, find answers and learn.
